HMAT A2 Geelong

 

11th Australian Light Horse Regiment, AIF, 7th Reinforcements Geelong Group, embarked from Adelaide, South Australia on board HMAT A2 Geelong 18 November 1915.

HMAT A2 Geelong weighed 7,851 tons with an average cruise speed of 12 knots or 22.22 kmph. It was owned by the P&O SN Co, London, and leased by the Commonwealth until it collided with SS Bonvilston in the Mediterranean and sunk, 1 January 1916.

The ensuing individual soldier's embarkation information contains the following details:

Rank on embarkation;

Full name of the soldier

Declared age of the soldier;

The last occupation held;

The last address as a civilian;

Enlistment Date; and,

Fate.

1417 Private Archibald BADENOCH, a 36 year old Labourer from Port McDonald, South Australia. He enlisted on 7 September 1915; and at the conclusion of the war Returned to Australia, 18 February 1919.

1418 Private Richard William BELLSHAW, a 25 year old Drover from Adelaide, South Australia. He enlisted on 25 August 1915; and at the conclusion of the war Returned to Australia, 24 July 1919.

1419 Private John Henry BREWSTER, an 18 year old Butcher from Quorn, South Australia. He enlisted on 28 August 1915; and subsequently Returned to Australia, 23 December 1918.

1420 Private Horace Millen BURFORD, an 18 year old Driver from Normanville, South Australia. He enlisted on 27 August 1915; and subsequently Returned to Australia, 2 September 1916.

1421 Private Bertie St Clair BURGESS, a 24 year old Rough rider from Torrensville, South Australia. He enlisted on 26 August 1915; and subsequently Returned to Australia, 12 November 1917.

 

1423 Private John Bernard CLARKE, a 28 year old Labourer from Mt Gambier, South Australia. He enlisted on 26 August 1915; and at the conclusion of the war Returned to Australia, 4 March 1919.

1424 Private Richard Varley CLOTHIER, a 33 year old Labourer from Kersbrook, South Australia. He enlisted on 24 August 1915; and at the conclusion of the war Returned to Australia, 1 April 1919.

1425 Private Francis COOPER, a 26 year old Labourer from North Adelaide, South Australia. He enlisted on 12 April 1915; and subsequently Died of Disease, 20 December 1915.

1426 Private Alfred Ernest CROFT, a 27 year old Labourer from Magill, South Australia. He enlisted on 26 August 1915; and subsequently Returned to Australia, 2 September 1916.

1427 Private George Bell CROSS, a 31 year old Baker from Woodchester SA. He enlisted on 30 August 1915; and subsequently Returned to Australia, 10 June 1916.

 

1428 Private Frank DEVITT, a 24 year old Farm Labourer from Bute, South Australia. He enlisted on 28 August 1915; and at the conclusion of the war Returned to Australia, 1 May 1919.

1429 Private Martin DEVITT, a 23 year old Butcher from Bute, South Australia. He enlisted on 28 August 1915; and subsequently Died of Disease, 7 July 1918.

 

1430 Private Hedley Arthur FORTH, a 25 year old Carrier from Petersburg, South Australia. He enlisted on 27 August 1915; and at the conclusion of the war Returned to Australia, 23 July 1919.

1431 Private George Howard FULLER, a 20 year old Butcher from Laura, South Australia. He enlisted on 16 September 1915; and subsequently Returned to Australia, 8 March 1917.

1265 Private Harold Rossfell FULLER, a 21 year old Electrician from Prospect, South Australia. He enlisted on 8 June 1915; and at the conclusion of the war Returned to Australia, 31 March 1919.

 

1432 Private Albert Edward GRIGNEY, a 19 year old Grocer from Magill, South Australia. He enlisted on 1 September 1915; and at the conclusion of the war Returned to Australia, 17 July 1919.

1434 Private William Daniel GUERIN, a 32 year old Marine store dealer from Adelaide, South Australia. He enlisted on 30 August 1915; and at the conclusion of the war Returned to Australia, 20 July 1919.

 

1435 Private George Andrew HAMILTON, a 27 year old Labourer from Mt Gambier, South Australia. He enlisted on 13 September 1915; and at the conclusion of the war Returned to Australia, 22 July 1919.

1436 Private Eric George Stanley HIGGINS, a 19 year old Bricklayer from Adelaide, South Australia. He enlisted on 20 July 1915; and at the conclusion of the war Returned to Australia, 20 July 1919.

1437 Private William George HOFFMANN, an 18 year old Farmer from Birkenhead, South Australia. He enlisted on 13 September 1915; and subsequently Returned to Australia, 20 December 1918.

1597 Private Rufus William HUNTER, a 21 year old Butcher from Broken Hill, New South Wales. He enlisted on 21 September 1915; and at the conclusion of the war Returned to Australia, 19 April 1919.

 

1439 Private Norman Alexander JANEWAY, a 19 year old Farmer from Mt Gambier, South Australia. He enlisted on 26 August 1915; and at the conclusion of the war Returned to Australia, 20 July 1919.

1438 Private Walter George JANEWAY, a 20 year old Farmer from Mt Gambier, South Australia. He enlisted on 26 August 1915; and at the conclusion of the war Returned to Australia, 20 September 1919.

1440 Private Leslie Richard JASPER, a 26 year old Labourer from Marchard, South Australia. He enlisted on 14 August 1915; and at the conclusion of the war Returned to Australia, 20 July 1919.

1441 Private Alexander John JOHNSTON, an 18 year old Farmer from Mt Gambier, South Australia. He enlisted on 26 August 1915; and at the conclusion of the war Returned to Australia, 13 April 1919.

1442 Private Edward Thomas JONES, a 38 year old Rail packer from Snowtown, South Australia. He enlisted on 15 September 1915; and at the conclusion of the war Returned to Australia, 1 January 1919.

 

1443 Private Edgar Allen KELLY, a 19 year old Farmer from Alma Plains, South Australia. He enlisted on 6 September 1915; and at the conclusion of the war Returned to Australia, 20 July 1919.

1445 Private Clarence KNOWLING, a 26 year old Pastry cook from Adelaide, South Australia. He enlisted on 23 June 1915; and at the conclusion of the war Returned to Australia, 13 April 1919.

1446 Private Charles KRONCKE, a 38 year old Horse driver from Truro, South Australia. He enlisted on 6 July 1915; and subsequently Returned to Australia, 3 March 1916.

 

6433 Private John Stanley McCALLUM, a 23 year old Farmer from Tower Hill, Victoria. He enlisted on 13 August 1915; but Did Not Embark and subsequently was Discharged, 7 September 1916.

1596 Private Arthur George MEDHURST, an 18 year old Farmer from Kalangadoo, South Australia. He enlisted on 27 August 1915; and subsequently Returned to Australia, 15 February 1918.

 

1451 Private Garnet Crocombe RIMES, a 24 year old Clerk from Bowden, South Australia. He enlisted on 11 August 1915; and subsequently Returned to Australia, 17 July 1916.

 

1452 Private Frank Ernest SHARLEY, a 19 year old Clerk from Petersburg, South Australia. He enlisted on 28 August 1915; and at the conclusion of the war Returned to Australia, 4 July 1919.

1455 Private George William SMITH, a 28 year old Baker from Laura, South Australia. He enlisted on 16 September 1915; and at the conclusion of the war Returned to Australia, 1 November 1919.

7543 Private Stanley SMITH, an 18 year old Painter from Mt Gambier, South Australia. He enlisted on 14 September 1915; and deserted but re-enlisted as 7114 Private Stanley Francis SMITHand subsequently was Killed in Action, 6 October 1917.

1453 Private Owen SOUTHAM, a 20 year old Butcher from Aldgate, South Australia. He enlisted on 13 September 1915; and subsequently Returned to Australia, 11 July 1917.

1611 Private Oliver Lindsay STUCKEY, a 32 year old Butcher from Mt Gambier, South Australia. He enlisted on 15 September 1915; but Did Not Embark but was transferred to the 9th LHR and at the conclusion of the war Returned to Australia, 29 April 1919.

1456 Private John Leslie SULLIVAN, an 18 year old Farm Labourer from Blackwood, South Australia. He enlisted on 15 September 1915; and subsequently Returned to Australia, 23 September 1916.

 

1457 Private Tracy Isaac THOMAS, a 19 year old Farmer from Lake Wangary, South Australia. He enlisted on 28 August 1915; and subsequently Returned to Australia, 20 November 1916.

1458 Private Albert Ernest Alfred TONKIN, a 22 year old Farmer from Eastern Well Mantung, South Australia. He enlisted on 27 July 1915; and at the conclusion of the war Returned to Australia, 19 January 1919.
