History:
Extracted from RK Peacock, Evolution of Australian Light Horse Regiments 1841-1935, p. 8.This regiment sprung from the growth in Light Horse Regiments as part of the Kichener Reforms to the Australian militia forces. This Regiment was formed from the Squadrons along the coastal region south of Sydney. The 28th Illawarra Light Horse was formed by amalgamating the 3rd and 5th Squadrons from the New South Wales Lancers with the New South Wales Mounted Rifles 6th Squadron. The new Regiment was formed on 1 July 1912. In 1921, the 28th Light Horse Regiment was joined to the 6th Light Horse Regiment becoming the 21st Light Horse Regiment. In 1929 it was linked to the 1st Light Horse Regiment to become 1/21st LHR and thus, as a unit ceased to exist.
