HMAT A7 Medic

2nd Australian Light Horse Regiment, AIF, 6th Reinforcements, embarked from Brisbane, Queensland on board HMAT A7 Medic 2 June 1915.

The HMAT A7 Medic weighed 12,032 tons with an average cruise speed of 13 knots or 24.07 kmph. It was owned by the Oceanic SN Co Ltd, Liverpool, and leased by the Commonwealth until 26 October 1917. The Medic was well known by the Australian forces as it was a key troopship for Australia during the Boer War, some 14 years before the re-engagement.

 

The ensuing individual soldier's embarkation information contains the following details:

Rank on embarkation;

Full name of the soldier;

Declared age of the soldier;

The last occupation held;

The last address as a civilian;

Enlistment Date; and,

Fate.

1007 Private Thomas Martin BYRNE, a 25 year old Shearer from Longreach, Queensland. He enlisted on 13 January 1915; and at the conclusion of the war, Returned to Australia, 13 March 1919.

 

1013 Private William CAMPBELL, a 21 year old Labourer from Cordalba, Queensland. He enlisted on 8 January 1915; and at the conclusion of the war, Returned to Australia, 13 March 1919.

1001 Acting Corporal William Joseph COLLINS, a 27 year old Painter from Einasleigh, Queensland. He enlisted on 12 January 1915; and at the conclusion of the war, Returned to Australia, 23 December 1918.

1014 Private William Victor CONNOLE, an 18 year old Labourer from Helidon, Queensland. He enlisted on 8 January 1915; and subsequently Returned to Australia, 10 March 1918.

1015 Private George Francis COOPER, a 19 year old Station hand from Charlotte Vale Coongoola, Queensland. He enlisted on 11 January 1915; and subsequently Returned to Australia, 15 February 1918.

 

1012 Private Robert DAWSON, a 21 year old Labourer from Ballina, New South Wales. He enlisted on 8 February 1915; and at the conclusion of the war, Returned to Australia, 13 March 1919.

1011 Private Geoffrey Ormond DEWEY, an 18 year old Bushman from Neutral Bay, New South Wales. He enlisted on 21 January 1915; and at the conclusion of the war, Returned to Australia, 5 August 1919.

1009 Private John Joseph DILLON, a 22 year old Labourer from Gympie, Queensland. He enlisted on 12 January 1915; and at the conclusion of the war, Returned to Australia, 22 August 1919.

1010 Private Albert DUDLEY, an 18 year old Labourer from Tea Rooms, Queensland. He enlisted on 21 January 1915; and at the conclusion of the war, Returned to Australia, 19 January 1919.

 

1017 Private William EDWARDS, a 33 year old Miner from Brisbane, Queensland. He enlisted on 6 February 1915; and at the conclusion of the war, Returned to Australia, 8 December 1919.

Second Lieutenant Frederick EVANS, a 29 year old Miner from Blackstone, Queensland. He enlisted on 6 March 1915; and at the conclusion of the war, Returned to Australia, 13 March 1919.

1016 Private Jack Edward EVANS, a 28 year old Farmer from Brandon, Queensland. He enlisted on 6 January 1915; and at the conclusion of the war, Returned to Australia, 13 March 1919.

 

1021 Private Charles Stuart FERGUSON, a 30 year old Stockman Labourer from Dunkeld, Queensland Mitchell, Queensland. He enlisted on 18 January 1915; and subsequently Died of Disease, 25 February 1919.

1054 Private George Allan FERGUSON, a 27 year old Farmer from Toowoomba, Queensland. He enlisted on 6 April 1915; and subsequently Returned to Australia, 21 May 1916.

1018 Private Percy Walter FINNIS, a 21 year old Labourer from Brisbane, Queensland. He enlisted on 18 January 1915; and subsequently was Killed in Action, 4 August 1916.

 

1056 Private Thomas Wilson GALLOWAY, a 26 year old Blacksmith from Bulimba, Queensland. He enlisted on 1 March 1915; and subsequently Returned to Australia, 30 August 1918.

1019 Private Henry Coleman GREGORY, a 21 year old Rail Fireman QR from Ayr, Queensland. He enlisted on 21 December 1914; and at the conclusion of the war, Returned to Australia, 11 May 1919.

1020 Private George GUY, a 21 year old Farmer from Chiltern, Victoria. He enlisted on 19 January 1915; and subsequently Returned to Australia, 23 August 1917.

2nd Australian Light Horse Regiment, AIF, 8th Reinforcements, embarked from Brisbane, Queensland on board HMAT A55 Kyarra on 16 August 1915.

The HMAT A55 Kyarra weighed 6,953 tons with an average cruise speed of 14 knots or 25.92 kmph. It was owned by the AUSN Co Ltd, London, and manned by Australia officers and crew. The Kyarra was leased by the Commonwealth until 4 January 1918. The Kyarra was torpedoed and sunk by a submarine in the English Channel, 26 May 1918.

1231 Private Douglas Grey Willes ARGUIMBAU, a 36 year old Bookkeeper from Rose Bay, New South Wales. He enlisted on 15 November 1914; and subsequently Returned to Australia, 17 July 1916.

1276 Private Henry James WATT, a 24 year old Butcher from Townsville, Queensland. He enlisted on 12 April 1915; and at the conclusion of the war, Returned to Australia, 5 March 1919.

6th Light Horse Regiment, War Diary Account.

 

The following is a transcription of the Account from the War Diary of the 6th Light Horse Regiment detailing its role at the First Battle of Gaza, Palestine, 26 to 27 March 1917.

 

Shunnar, 25 March 1917

Regiment marched out from Shunnar at 0230 and bivouacked at Deir el Belah 1000. Strength marching out 22 Officers, 426 Other Ranks and 519 horses.


Gaza, 26 March 1917

Marched out from Belah to Gaza 0300 with Brigade. 2 Squadrons were in reserve to 5th and 7th Light Horse Regiments north east of Gaza. 3 Troops under Major Cross and 1 Troop with Lieutenant Hardy were detailed to delay enemy reinforcements arriving by beach route. 1 Troops cleared Beit Hanun at 1230. "A" and "B" Squadrons under Major White formed an outpost line at eastern sandhills to beach, a distance of about 4 miles, protecting Brigade from rear.


Deir el Belah 27 March 1917

Left Gaza 2400 and marched in to Belah arriving there 0730 on 27 March 1917, watered and rode out to bivouac about 1 mile from old bivouac, remained here all day and again watered in bivouac for night about 1 mile away in good feed country. No casualties.
