 HMAT A7 Medic

 

11th Australian Light Horse Regiment, AIF, Headquarters Section, embarked from Brisbane, Queensland on board HMAT A7 Medic 2 June 1915.

The HMAT A7 Medic weighed 12,032 tons with an average cruise speed of 13 knots or 24.07 kmph. It was owned by the Oceanic SN Co Ltd, Liverpool, and leased by the Commonwealth until 26 October 1917. The Medic was well known by the Australian forces as it was a key troopship for Australia during the Boer War, some 14 years before the re-engagement.

The ensuing individual soldier's embarkation information contains the following details:

Rank on embarkation;

Full name of the soldier

Declared age of the soldier;

The last occupation held;

The last address as a civilian;

Enlistment Date; and,

Fate.

Captain Percival John BAILEY, a 32 year old Auctioneer from Toowoomba, Queensland. He enlisted on 20 March 1915; and at the conclusion of the war Returned to Australia, 22 July 1919.

10 Driver Fenwick Herbert BAKER, a 20 year old Motor Mechanic from Halifax, Queensland. He enlisted on 24 March 1915; and at the conclusion of the war Returned to Australia, 13 July 1919.

Major Sydney William BARLOW, a 47 year old Engineer from Glenvale via Toowoomba, Queensland. He enlisted on 20 March 1915; and subsequently Returned to Australia, 31 August 1916.

11 Private Harold Macarthur BOWMAN, a 28 year old Sheep overseer from Brisbane, Queensland. He enlisted on 24 March 1915; and subsequently Returned to Australia, 3 August 1918.

12 Driver John BROWN, a 33 year old Stockkeeper from St George, Queensland. He enlisted on 14 January 1915; and at the conclusion of the war Returned to Australia, 6 August 1919.

13 Driver Ernest Leslie BRUCE, a 21 year old Stockman from Charters Towers, Queensland. He enlisted on 6 January 1915; and at the conclusion of the war Returned to Australia, 20 July 1919.

14 Private Alexander Charles BURNESS, a 21 year old Law Clerk from Toowoomba, Queensland. He enlisted on 4 January 1915; and at the conclusion of the war Returned to Australia, 20 July 1919.

15 Private James Daniel BYRNE, a 23 year old Electrician from Gympie, Queensland. He enlisted on 8 January 1915; and at the conclusion of the war Returned to Australia, 21 March 1919.

 

9 Saddler Sergeant James Arthur CAIRNS, a 45 year old Saddler from Coorparoo, Queensland. He enlisted on 9 March 1915; and subsequently Returned to Australia, 5 July 1916.

585 Corporal Frederick Michael CARNEY, a 29 year old Salvation Army officer from Fermont Bellinger River, New South Wales. He enlisted on 25 January 1915; and subsequently was Killed in Action, 1 November 1917.

16 Private Arthur Percy CARR, a 27 year old Farmer from Oakley via Halifax, Queensland. He enlisted on 8 January 1915; and at the conclusion of the war Returned to Australia, 20 July 1919.

17 Private Charles Roland CARR, a 24 year old Farmer from Oakley via Halifax, Queensland. He enlisted on 8 January 1915; and at the conclusion of the war Returned to Australia, 3 September 1919.

18 Private Edgar Norman CARR, a 25 year old Storekeeper from Oakley via Halifax, Queensland. He enlisted on 9 January 1915; and at the conclusion of the war Returned to Australia, 4 March 1919.

20 Driver Charles Barnes CORY, a 25 year old Motor driver from Taroborah, Queensland. He enlisted on 8 April 1915; and at the conclusion of the war Returned to Australia, 20 July 1919.

19 Driver Thomas Barnes CORY, an 18 year old Station hand from Taroborah, Queensland. He enlisted on 9 February 1915; and at the conclusion of the war Returned to Australia, 20 July 1919.

 

389 Private William Francis DALY, a 20 year old Stockman from New Farm, Queensland. He enlisted on 18 February 1915; and at the conclusion of the war Returned to Australia, 28 March 1919.

1 Regimental Sergeant Major Hugh Stephen DAVEY, a 24 year old Teacher from Malvern, Victoria. He enlisted on 8 February 1915; and at the conclusion of the war Returned to Australia, 1 May 1919.

22 Signaller Vincent DONNELLY, a 22 year old Labourer from Cairns, Queensland. He enlisted on 25 January 1915; and at the conclusion of the war Returned to Australia, 10 July 1919.

137 Regimental Quartermaster Sergeant Frank DYKE, a 22 year old Clerk from Brisbane, Queensland. He enlisted on 8 February 1915; and subsequently Returned to Australia, 21 December 1917.

 

23 Signaller Edward Godfrey Cyril EARDLEY, a 19 year old Engineers assistant from Gympie, Queensland. He enlisted on 10 December 1914; and at the conclusion of the war Returned to Australia, 20 July 1919.

24 Signaller Ernest EDWARDS, a 24 year old Motor driver from Hamilton, Queensland. He enlisted on 23 February 1915; and at the conclusion of the war Returned to Australia, 20 July 1919.

 

586 Private William FENTON, a 22 year old Horse driver from Wooloolah, Queensland. He enlisted on 18 January 1915; and subsequently Died of Disease, 23 December 1918.

6 Armourer Sergeant James FLEMING, a 29 year old Engineer from Brisbane, Queensland. He enlisted on 17 February 1915; and at the conclusion of the war Returned to Australia, 13 March 1919.

 

Lieutenant Colonel William GRANT, a 44 year old Grazier from Bowenville, Queensland. He enlisted on 16 March 1915; and at the conclusion of the war Returned to Australia, 29 April 1919.

587 Private William Endicott GRATTON, a 30 year old Station hand from Okehampton, Devonshire, England. He enlisted on 2 January 1915; and subsequently Returned to Australia, 16 December 1917.

25 Signaller George GROUNDWATER, a 24 year old Telegraphist from Howard, Queensland. He enlisted on 1 March 1915; and at the conclusion of the war Returned to Australia, 5 March 1919.

 

26 Private James Joseph HANCOCK, a 22 year old Letterpress printer from Brisbane, Queensland. He enlisted on 14 December 1914; and at the conclusion of the war Returned to Australia, 3 July 1919.

27 Lance Corporal Walter Charles HARKISS, a 30 year old Grazier from Toowoomba, Queensland. He enlisted on 12 January 1915; and at the conclusion of the war Returned to Australia, 12 June 1919.

28 Signaller Alfred John HOGARTH, a 23 year old Stockman from Thursday Is, Queensland. He enlisted on 24 March 1915; and at the conclusion of the war Returned to Australia, 15 June 1919.

516 Sergeant Bugler Victor HOWE, a 29 year old Horse driver from Adelaide, South Australia. He enlisted on 9 December 1914; and subsequently Returned to Australia, 2 September 1916.

 

Honorary Lieutenant Alfred LEVINGSTON, a 33 year old Storeman from Rockhampton, Queensland. He enlisted on 15 January 1915; and subsequently Died of Disease, 17 November 1917.

30 Private Henry LUXON, a 22 year old Station hand from Brisbane, Queensland. He enlisted on 9 February 1915; and at the conclusion of the war Returned to Australia, 24 July 1919.

 

Dr Captain John MacDONALD, a 32 year old Doctor from Ipswich, Queensland. He enlisted on 26 March 1915; and at the conclusion of the war Returned to Australia, 12 March 1920.

31 Private Joseph McELLIGOTT, a 21 year old Telegraph operator from Milla Milla, Queensland. He enlisted on 29 December 1914; and at the conclusion of the war Returned to Australia, 5 August 1919.

Vet Captain Alexander James McKENZIE, a 43 year old Veterinary Surgeon from Lismore, New South Wales. He enlisted on 12 April 1915; and subsequently Returned to Australia, 12 March 1918.

 

4 Orderly Room Sergeant Gerald William NUTTING, a 29 year old Farmer from Nambour, Queensland. He enlisted on 8 February 1915; and subsequently Returned to Australia, 23 December 1918.

 

3 Farrier Quartermaster Sergeant Thomas PARSONAGE, a 39 year old Farrier from Brisbane, Queensland. He enlisted on 6 April 1915; and subsequently was Discharged, 12 July 1916.

32 Lance Corporal Royce Theodore PEPPERCORN, a 21 year old Surveyors assistant from Brisbane, Queensland. He enlisted on 6 October 1914; and at the conclusion of the war Returned to Australia, 3 July 1919.

 

5 Sergeant Cook William Robert RANSOME, a 31 year old Labourer / Cook from Albert Park, Victoria. He enlisted on 30 December 1914; and at the conclusion of the war Returned to Australia, 12 June 1919.

34 Driver Santo REGAZZOLI, a 21 year old Farmer from Halifax, Queensland. He enlisted on 6 February 1915; and at the conclusion of the war Returned to Australia, 4 July 1919.

38 Private Kenneth Stanley Willis THORN, an 18 year old Telegraphist from Barcaldine, Queensland. He enlisted on 16 March 1915; and subsequently was Killed in Action, 25 September 1918.

 

39 Driver Bruno WAGENKNECHT, a 27 year old Labourer from Gympie, Queensland. He enlisted on 2 February 1915; and at the conclusion of the war Returned to Australia, 9 July 1919.
