The following entries are extracted and transcribed from the 9th Light Horse Regiment War Diary, the originals of which are held by the Australian War Memorial. There are 366 entries on this site. Each day has entries as they occurred from 1914 to 1919. In addition to the 9th Light Horse Regiment War Diary, when appropriate, entries from the 3rd Light Horse Brigade War Diary and other regiments with the Brigade will also appear. Entries from the unit history, Darley, TH, With the Ninth Light Horse in the Great War, Adelaide, Hassell Press, 1924 will also appear from time to time. The aim is to give the broadest context to the story and allow the reader to follow the day to day activities of the regiment. If a relative happened to have served in the regiment during the Great War, then this provides a general framework in which the individual story may be told.

See 4th Military District, South Australia for militia activities.

1915

Thursday, April 22, 1915
9th Light Horse Regiment Location - Mena Camp, Egypt.
9th Light Horse Regiment War Diary - No entry.

1916

Saturday, April 22, 1916
9th Light Horse Regiment Location - Serapeum, Egypt.
9th Light Horse Regiment War Diary - No entry.

1917

Sunday, April 22, 1917

9th Light Horse Regiment Location - El Mendur

9th Light Horse Regiment War Diary - The Regiment remained at El Mendur resting.

1300 working party of 60 Other Ranks under Bleechmore, Major C, sent to Tel el Jemmi trench diggings.

At 1900 moved with the Brigade back to Abasan el Kebir and bivouacked at 2300 about one mile north east of Abasan el Kebir. All horses of men who have become casualties, 80, were sent back to Deir el Belah.

1918

Monday, April 22, 1918

9th Light Horse Regiment Location - Enab, Jerusalem

9th Light Horse Regiment War Diary - Moved from Enab and arrived at outskirts of Jerusalem at 0930.

Horses were fed and watered and at 1030 moved off passing the modern Jerusalem thence outside the north western wall of Old Jerusalem past St Stephen's Gate and the Garden of Gethsemane, through Bethany thence along Jericho Road to Talaat ed Dumm arriving there at 1510 and bivouacked.

Brigade transport arrived at 1615 after a particularly hard march from Enab over very hilly country.

1919

Tuesday, April 22, 1919

9th Light Horse Regiment Location - Zagazig

9th Light Horse Regiment War Diary - Orders issued reference change over of Squadrons. One mounted troop patrolled to El Ghar and Ku Abaza reporting all quiet.

Simpson, 639 Shoeing Smith J, was tried by the FGCM [Field General Court Martial].

Change over of A and B Squadrons commenced.
