5th Australian Light Horse Regiment, AIF, 4th Reinforcements, embarked from Brisbane, Queensland on board HMAT A15 Star of England 8 April 1915.

The HMAT A15 Star of England, later renamed Port Sydney, weighed 9,136 tons with an average cruise speed of 13.5 knots or 25.00 kmph. It was owned by the Commonwealth & Dominion Line Ltd, London, and leased by the Commonwealth until 22 September 1917.

The ensuing individual soldier's embarkation information contains the following details:

Rank on embarkation;

Full name of the soldier;

Declared age of the soldier;

The last occupation held;

The last address as a civilian;

Enlistment Date; and,

Fate.

874 Private Stephen William HUNT, a 26 year old Farmer from Atherton, Queensland. He enlisted on 29 December 1914; and subsequently Died of Disease, 18 July 1915.

 

875 Private Andrew James JENKINS, a 29 year old Selector from Gindie via Emerald, Queensland. He enlisted on 21 December 1914; and at the conclusion of the war Returned to Australia, 28 January 1919.

876 Private Harold Ambrose JOHNSON, a 24 year old Labourer from Brisbane, Queensland. He enlisted on 24 December 1914; and subsequently Returned to Australia, 25 July 1918.

873 Private Frederick James JOYCE, a 21 year old Labourer from Gympie, Queensland. He enlisted on 2 January 1915; and at the conclusion of the war Returned to Australia, 15 March 1919.

887 Private John Victor MATTHEWS, a 26 year old Farmer from Tumoulin, Queensland. He enlisted on 11 December 1914; and at the conclusion of the war Returned to Australia, 28 June 1919.

882 Signaller James McLEAN, a 19 year old Labourer from Bundaberg, Queensland. He enlisted on 4 January 1915; and subsequently was Killed in Action, 28 June 1915.

881 Private Joseph Charles MOORE, a 34 year old Station hand from Fitzroy, Victoria. He enlisted on 27 December 1914; and at the conclusion of the war Returned to Australia, 28 June 1919.

893 Private Gordon Thomas SPENCELEY, a 21 year old Stockman from Wynnum, Queensland. He enlisted on 29 December 1914; and deserted 22 August 1918 but made his way to England where he Returned to Australia, 12 March 1919.

895 Acting Corporal Gerald William STANLEY, a 21 year old Station hand from Brisbane, Queensland. He enlisted on 28 December 1914; and at the conclusion of the war Returned to Australia, 9 July 1919.

896 Private Thomas Alfred SYKES, a 33 year old Well borer from Leichhardt, New South Wales. He enlisted on 28 December 1914; and subsequently Died of Disease, 28 December 1915, and subsequently was buried at sea.

HMAT A55 Kyarra, 1916

 

5th Australian Light Horse Regiment, AIF, 8th Reinforcements, embarked from Brisbane, Queensland on board HMAT A55 Kyarra 10 August 1915.

The HMAT A55 Kyarra weighed 6,953 tons with an average cruise speed of 14 knots or 25.92 kmph. It was owned by the AUSN Co Ltd, London, and manned by Australia officers and crew. The Kyarra was leased by the Commonwealth until 4 January 1918. The Kyarra was torpedoed and sunk by a submarine in the English Channel, 26 May 1918.
