"At a mile distant their thousand hooves were stuttering thunder, coming at a rate that frightened a man - they were an awe inspiring sight, galloping through the red haze - knee to knee and horse to horse - the dying sun glinting on bayonet points..." Trooper Ion Idriess

The Battle of Coetzee Drift, South Africa, 5 May 1900

262 Private Dalgety Gordon Campbell, wounded

Coetzee's Drift, an action during the Second South African War, fought on 5 May 1900 along the Vet River in Orange Free State.

262 Private Dalgety Gordon Campbell

Dalgetty Gordon Campbell was born in 1877 in Sydney. His parents were Robert John (1837 - ?) and Nora (Zora) neé Dalgety (1845 - 1917) who married at Paddington in 1867. Campbell was the youngest of six children, the others being: Arthur P (1867), Isabella C (1869), Mabel Z (1871),  Ethel Maud (1873), Ivy (1875). After leaving school, he became a journalist. In 1899 he enlisted for service with the 1st NSW Mounted Rifles. He was accepted for service with the Regimental number 262 as a Private with "C" Squadron. During the engagement at Coetzee's Drift on the Vet River, Campbell was reported as wounded. The injury healed rapidly and he was soon back with the 1st NSW Mounted Rifles. Campbell was wounded again during the action at Diamond Hill, 11-12 June 1900. He was invalided back to Australia and arrived in Sydney on 30 August 1900.

After a period of recovery, Campbell again offered his services to fight in South Africa. This time, on 28 February 1901, he received a commission as Second Lieutenant with the 2nd NSW Mounted Rifles. This time he completed his full tour of duty from arrival in South Africa, 17 April 1901 until he returned to Sydney, 4 June 1902.

For his service in South Africa, he was awarded the Queen's South African Medal with four bars, they being: Driefontein, Johannesberg, Cape Colony and Diamond Hill.

Australian Light Horse Regimental Militia Field Force

Contents

The following is a listing of all the known Light Horse formations that were brought into being subsequent to the re-organisation of 1903. It details the unfolding of the service as part of the Militia in Australia until 1920. Included in this time period are the re-organisations of 1912 and 1918. All these changes altered the original disparate mounted formations in the states to something that was uniform and systematic, the aim of Federation in 1901. The transformations were massive in terms of that which existed prior to Federation. It is from this structure that the legends of the Light Horse during the Great War were wrought and have become an enduring part of Australian folk history. Without the Militia the Australian government could not raise and train the significant forces it did from 1914 to 1916 and then maintain this force in the field with a high level of efficiency. The Militia was the backbone of the AIF and yet remains the unsung area of Australian history.

To give its proper place, each Regiment which formed the Australian mounted Militia is dissected on an annual basis to highlight the following information:

The name of the Regiment;

An outline of unit lineage from foundation to current day;
Regimental Hat Badge picture;
Motto of the Regiment;
March tune of the Regiment, if applicable;
Battle honours from South Africa if applicable;
Details of affiliation with King Edward's Horse, if applicable;
The Regimental catchment area within a state;

The Division, if applicable, in which the Regiment was placed;
The Brigade, if applicable, to which the Regiment belonged as part of a larger formation;
Headquarters location;

The name of the appointed Honorary Colonel;

The Commanding Officer details;

The Adjutant;

The Quartermaster;

The Medical Officer;

The Veterinary Officer;

The location and staffing of the Machine Gun Section;

Squadron details including:
Squadron Number;

Location of troops in the Squadron; and,
Names of officers attached to the Squadron.
Service details of each officer which includes:
Full name of the officer;

Rank of the officer;

Date of gazetting of that rank;

Any distinctions and titles;

Honorary ranks; and,

Previous or current war service.
At the bottom of each page are various navigation aids:
Previous indicates the Regiment as it existed a year prior to that being examined; and,

Next indicates the Regiment following in the series.

Following this is a menu of items which invites the reader to examine further aspects of this particular Regiment in a specific sense or in more general terms.

The aim is to present a comprehensive snap shot of the particular Regiment at a point in time. The accuracy of the information is dependent ultimately upon the information recorded in the various Government Gazettes and the Military Orders of the states and the Commonwealth.
