HMAT A15 Port Sydney

 

The General Service Reinforcements, 4th GSR, Queensland, embarked from Sydney, New South Wales, on board the HMAT A15 Port Sydney 17 August 1918.

The HMAT A15 Star of England, later renamed Port Sydney, weighed 9,136 tons with an average cruise speed of 13.5 knots or 25.00 kmph. It was owned by the Commonwealth & Dominion Line Ltd, London, and leased by the Commonwealth until 22 September 1917.

The ensuing individual soldier's embarkation information contains the following details:

Rank on embarkation;

Full name of the soldier

Declared age of the soldier;

The last occupation held;

The last address as a civilian;

Enlistment Date; and,

Fate.

57253 Private Herbert Alexander ALLEN, a 21 year old Farmer from Gympie, Queensland. He enlisted on 10 May 1918. After embarkation and arrival in Egypt where he underwent additional training, he was allotted to the 1st Light Horse Machine Gun Squadron; and at the conclusion of the war Returned to Australia 15 May 1919.

 

57242 Private Edward John BATTLE, a 19 year old Bank Clerk from Rockhampton, Queensland. He enlisted on 11 June 1918. After embarkation and arrival in Egypt where he underwent additional training, he was allotted to the 2nd Light Horse Machine Gun Squadron; and at the conclusion of the war Returned to Australia 29 June 1919.

57243 Private Herbert Victor BYTH, a 21 year old University Graduate from Brisbane, Queensland. He enlisted on 8 May 1918. After embarkation and arrival in Egypt where he underwent additional training, he was allotted to the 2nd Australian Stationery Hospital; and subsequently was Discharged 7 September 1919.

 

57773 Acting Sergeant George Thomas CAIN, a 41 year old Clerk from East Brisbane, Queensland. He enlisted on 15 May 1918. After embarkation and arrival in Egypt where he underwent additional training, he was allotted to the ER Cpl 25Bn to AIF HQ UK (British RGA 12 years); and at the conclusion of the war Returned to Australia 9 August 1919.

57241 Private James Henry COOPER, an 18 year old Dairy Hand from Lismore, New South Wales. He enlisted on 23 May 1918. After embarkation and arrival in Egypt where he underwent additional training, he was allotted to the 2nd Light Horse Field Ambulance; and at the conclusion of the war Returned to Australia 2 August 1919.

57244 Private James Michael COSTAR, a 20 year old Stockman from Maryborough, Queensland. He enlisted on 21 May 1918. After embarkation and arrival in Egypt where he underwent additional training, he was allotted to the 2nd Light Horse Regiment; and at the conclusion of the war Returned to Australia 15 June 1919.

57245 Private Thomas John CRILLY, a 19 year old Labourer from Brisbane, Queensland. He enlisted on 28 May 1918. After embarkation and arrival in Egypt where he underwent additional training, he was allotted to the 11th Light Horse Regiment; and at the conclusion of the war Returned to Australia 20 July 1919.

57246 Private Albert Thomas CURRAN, a 33 year old Farmer from Townsville, Queensland. He enlisted on 8 May 1918. After embarkation and arrival in Egypt where he underwent additional training, he was allotted to the 11th Light Horse Regiment; and at the conclusion of the war Returned to Australia 14 March 1919.

 

57259 Private Allan DALE, an 18 year old Farmer from Maryborough, Queensland. He enlisted on 9 May 1918. After embarkation and arrival in Egypt where he underwent additional training, he was allotted to the 11th Light Horse Regiment; and at the conclusion of the war Returned to Australia 14 March 1919.

57247 Private Horace Thomas DALTON, a 19 year old Farmer from Cleveland, Queensland. He enlisted on 16 May 1918. After embarkation and arrival in Egypt where he underwent additional training, he was allotted to the 11th Light Horse Regiment; and at the conclusion of the war Returned to Australia 20 July 1919.

57684 Private Henry Charles DeCOURCY, a 21 year old Teamster from Armidale, New South Wales. He enlisted on 15 May 1918. After embarkation was disembarked at Wellington, 12 June 1918, hence Not Taken On Strength; and subsequently Returned to Australia 17 June 1918.

57248 Private Cedric George DRAKE, a 19 year old Stockman from Brisbane, Queensland. He enlisted on 23 May 1918. After embarkation and arrival in Egypt where he underwent additional training, he was allotted to the 5th Light Horse Regiment; and at the conclusion of the war Returned to Australia 28 June 1919.

 

57249 Private Alfred George EDWARDS, a 37 year old Horseman from Ipswich, Queensland. He enlisted on 22 November 1917. After embarkation and arrival in Egypt where he underwent additional training, he was allotted to the 11th Light Horse Regiment; and at the conclusion of the war Returned to Australia 20 July 1919.

 

57750 Private Harry Oliver FLETCHER, a 21 year old Farmer from Allan via Warwick, Queensland. He enlisted on 1 May 1918. After embarkation and arrival in Egypt where he underwent additional training, he was allotted to the 9th Infantry Battalion; and at the conclusion of the war Returned to Australia 18 December 1919.

 

57752 Private William Charles GILLAM, a 23 year old Grocer from Clifton, Queensland. He enlisted on 30 April 1919. After embarkation and arrival in Egypt where he underwent additional training, he was allotted to the 3rd Division Ammunition Column; and at the conclusion of the war Returned to Australia 19 April 1919.

57250 Private Ronald Thomas GRIMLEY, a 20 year old Public servant from Gympie, Queensland. He enlisted on 23 July 1917. After embarkation and arrival in Egypt where he underwent additional training, he was allotted to the 2nd Light Horse Field Ambulance; and at the conclusion of the war Returned to Australia 3 July 1919.

 

57327 Private William Gordon HUTCHISON, a 21 year old Farmer from Glen Innes, New South Wales. He enlisted on 13 May 1918. After embarkation and arrival in Egypt where he underwent additional training, he was allotted to the 6th Light Horse Regiment; and at the conclusion of the war Returned to Australia 27 June 1919.

 

57271 Private Thomas Allan KIRKPATRICK, a 19 year old Labourer from Bundaberg, Queensland. He enlisted on 29 June 1918. After embarkation and arrival in Egypt where he underwent additional training, he was allotted to the 11th Light Horse Regiment; and at the conclusion of the war Returned to Australia 20 July 1919.

57251 Private Edward Henry KNIGHT, a 20 year old Labourer from Bell, Queensland. He enlisted on 17 May 1918. After embarkation and arrival in Egypt where he underwent additional training, he was allotted to the 2nd Light Horse Regiment; and at the conclusion of the war Returned to Australia 13 March 1919.

 

57722 Private Alfred McCULLOCH, an 18 year old University Student from Ipswich, Queensland. He enlisted on 7 February 1918. After embarkation and arrival in Egypt where he underwent additional training, he was allotted to the 9th Infantry Battalion; and at the conclusion of the war Returned to Australia 25 March 1919.

57255 Private Patrick Joseph McMULLEN, an 18 year old Labourer from Rosewood via Ipswich, Queensland. He enlisted on 11 February 1918. After embarkation and arrival in Egypt where he underwent additional training, he was allotted to the 2nd Light Horse Regiment; and at the conclusion of the war Returned to Australia 13 March 1919.

57270 Private David Bruce McWILLIAM, a 20 year old Teacher from Koolunga Mt Perry, Queensland. He enlisted on 5 July 1918. After embarkation and arrival in Egypt where he underwent additional training, he was allotted to the 2nd Light Horse Field Ambulance; and at the conclusion of the war Returned to Australia 28 June 1919.

 

57256 Private George James NOLAN, a 35 year old Cane Cutter from Ballina, New South Wales. He enlisted on 14 September 1915. After embarkation and arrival in Egypt where he underwent additional training, he was allotted to the 1st Light Horse Field Squadron Engineers; and at the conclusion of the war Returned to Australia 3 July 1919.

 

57257 Private Selwyn Robert Alexander OGG, an 18 year old Jackeroo from Newmarket, Queensland. He enlisted on 11 April 1918. After embarkation and arrival in Egypt where he underwent additional training, he was allotted to the 11th Light Horse Regiment; and at the conclusion of the war Returned to Australia 20 July 1919.

 

57258 Private John Sydney POPE, a 22 year old Stockman from Wondai, Queensland. He enlisted on 21 May 1918. After embarkation and arrival in Egypt where he underwent additional training, he was allotted to the 11th Light Horse Regiment; and at the conclusion of the war Returned to Australia 20 July 1919.

 

57260 Private John Henry RACKLEY, an 18 year old Tram worker from Mt Gravatt, Queensland. He enlisted on 28 January 1918. After embarkation and arrival in Egypt where he underwent additional training, he was allotted to the 11th Light Horse Regiment; and at the conclusion of the war Returned to Australia 20 July 1919.

57761 Private Frank ROSE, an 18 year old Labourer from Brisbane, Queensland. He enlisted on 13 May 1918. After embarkation and arrival in Egypt where he underwent additional training, he was allotted to the Not Taken On Strength; and subsequently was Discharged 1 April 1920.

57262 Private Patrick RYAN, a 19 year old Mechanical fitter from Brisbane, Queensland. He enlisted on 27 May 1918. After embarkation and arrival in Egypt where he underwent additional training, he was allotted to the 2nd Light Horse Machine Gun Squadron; and at the conclusion of the war Returned to Australia 28 June 1919.

 

57263 Private Arthur Ernest SKELLERN, an 18 year old Labourer from Dinmore, Queensland. He enlisted on 26 May 1918. After embarkation and arrival in Egypt where he underwent additional training, he was allotted to the 3rd Light Horse Field Ambulance; and at the conclusion of the war Returned to Australia 10 July 1919.

57252 Private Thomas William SOMERVILLE, an 18 year old Labourer from Lismore, New South Wales. He enlisted on 9 February 1918. After embarkation and arrival in Egypt where he underwent additional training, he was allotted to the 11th Light Horse Regiment; and at the conclusion of the war Returned to Australia 26 July 1919.

57264 Private William John SPALL, a 25 year old Sadler from Manly, Queensland. He enlisted on 3 June 1918. After embarkation and arrival in Egypt where he underwent additional training, he was allotted to the 1st Light Horse Field Ambulance; and at the conclusion of the war Returned to Australia 13 March 1919.

57265 Private John Henry SPRINGER, an 18 year old Labourer from Brisbane, Queensland. He enlisted on 11 February 1918. After embarkation and arrival in Egypt where he underwent additional training, he was allotted to the 1st Light Horse Field Ambulance; and at the conclusion of the war Returned to Australia 16 May 1919.

57266 Private Alexander Frederick SUTHERLAND, a 19 year old Labourer from Maryborough, Queensland. He enlisted on 6 June 1918. After embarkation and arrival in Egypt where he underwent additional training, he was allotted to the 11th Light Horse Regiment; and at the conclusion of the war Returned to Australia 20 July 1919.

 

57267 Private Gideon Barry TELFORD, a 19 year old Station hand from Longreach, Queensland. He enlisted on 21 March 1918. After embarkation and arrival in Egypt where he underwent additional training, he was allotted to the 1st Light Horse Machine Gun Squadron; and at the conclusion of the war Returned to Australia 15 May 1919.

57648 Private William James TIGHE, a 26 year old Labourer from Ipswich, Queensland. He enlisted on 11 January 1915. After embarkation and arrival in Egypt where he underwent additional training, he was allotted to the 25th Infantry Battalion; and at the conclusion of the war Returned to Australia 9 December 1918.

 

57268 Private Percival Frederick WATSON, an 18 year old Grocer from Clayfield, Queensland. He enlisted on 31 December 1917. After embarkation and arrival in Egypt where he underwent additional training, he was allotted to the 2nd Light Horse Machine Gun Squadron; and at the conclusion of the war Returned to Australia 28 June 1919.

57269 Private Allan Carswell WYLES, an 18 year old Clerk from Brisbane, Queensland. He enlisted on 19 April 1918. 57471 Private Albert Watson WOODBURN, a 32 year old Farmer from Melbourne, Victoria. He enlisted on 27 March 1918. HMAT A15 Port Sydney

 

The General Service Reinforcements, 4th GSR, Western Australia, embarked from Sydney, New South Wales, on board the HMAT A15 Port Sydney 17 August 1918.

The HMAT A15 Star of England, later renamed Port Sydney, weighed 9,136 tons with an average cruise speed of 13.5 knots or 25.00 kmph. It was owned by the Commonwealth & Dominion Line Ltd, London, and leased by the Commonwealth until 22 September 1917.

The ensuing individual soldier's embarkation information contains the following details:

Rank on embarkation;

Full name of the soldier

Declared age of the soldier;

The last occupation held;

The last address as a civilian;

Enlistment Date; and,

Fate.

57534 Private William Ewart Gladstone COXON, a 19 year old Farmer from Northam, Victoria. He enlisted on 12 March 1918. After embarkation and arrival in Egypt where he underwent additional training, he was allotted to the 3rd Light Horse Machine Gun Squadron; and at the conclusion of the war Returned to Australia 10 July 1919.

57536 Private Bruce Stanford DUNCAN, an 18 year old Motor mechanic from Narrogin, Western Australia. He enlisted on 14 May 1918. After embarkation and arrival in Egypt where he underwent additional training, he was allotted to the 3rd Light Horse Machine Gun Squadron; and at the conclusion of the war Returned to Australia 10 July 1919.

57539 Private Jesse Lilburne PARKE, an 18 year old Orchardist from Donnybrook, Western Australia. He enlisted on 14 May 1918. After embarkation and arrival in Egypt where he underwent additional training, he was allotted to the 38th Company Australian Army Supply Corps Australian Mounted Division Train; and at the conclusion of the war Returned to Australia 26 July 1919.

 

57541 Private Clement Campbell SMITH, a 20 year old Farmer from Perth, Western Australia. He enlisted on 14 March 1918. After embarkation and arrival in Egypt where he underwent additional training, he was allotted to the 4th Light Horse Machine Gun Squadron; and at the conclusion of the war Returned to Australia 24 July 1919.

57542 Private David George SMYTHE, a 38 year old Motor mechanic from Geraldton, Western Australia. He enlisted on 10 April 1918. After embarkation and arrival in Egypt where he underwent additional training, he was allotted to the 1st Light Horse Field Ambulance; and at the conclusion of the war Returned to Australia 16 May 1919.

 

57543 Private Frederick Gerard WICKENDEN, an 18 year old Jockey from Belmont, Western Australia. He enlisted on 18 June 1918.
