Infantry Regiments renamed Infantry Battalions
This MO is a defining moment in Australian military language. Prior to this date, infantry formations were known as Regiments but now were to be called Battalions. In contrast, mounted formations still retained the name Regiment and thus was distinguised from the infantry. This situation was reflected in the AIF when infantry retained the term Battalion and mounted formations were called Regiments.Citation: Military Order 57, 1908
