Below is a brief historical outline from RK Peacock, Evolution of Australian Light Horse Regiments 1841-1935, Unpublished MSS, c.1936, p. 12.
The Regiment originally sprang from the 6th Australian Light Horse Regiment (Australian Horse) which was brought into existence in 1903. In 1907 the 6th Australian Light Horse Regiment became known as the 6th Australian Light Horse Regiment (New England Light Horse), a title it carried until 1912 when it was known as the 5th Australian Light Horse Regiment (New England Light Horse). It carried this title until the divisional organisation of 1921 when it became designated as the 12th Australian Light Horse Regiment (New England Light Horse).
New England Light Horse
Originally known as The Australian Horse, after the split of the regiment in 1903, the northern regiment was still the Australian Horse, and then after 1907, New England Light Horse.
