HMAT A53 Itria 

 

2nd Australian Light Horse Regiment, AIF, 3rd Reinforcements, embarked from Brisbane, Queensland on board HMAT A53 Itria 9 February 1915.

The HMAT A53 Itria weighed 5,318 tons with an average cruise speed of 10 knots or 18.52 kmph. It was owned by the British India SN Co Ltd, London, and leased by the Commonwealth until 17 June 1917.

The ensuing individual soldier's embarkation information contains the following details:

Rank on embarkation;

Full name of the soldier;

Declared age of the soldier;

The last occupation held;

The last address as a civilian;

Enlistment Date; and,

Fate.

755 Private Albert ANDERSON, a 24 year old Labourer from Cunnamulla, Queensland. He enlisted on 16 December 1914; and subsequently was Killed in Action, 7 August 1915.

754 Private Ralph Irving ARNOLD, a 26 year old Overseer from North Sydney, New South Wales. He enlisted on 15 December 1914; and subsequently was Killed in Action, 8 August 1916.

 

760 Private Percy Edward BATE, a 23 year old Sugar grower from Airdmillan, Queensland. He enlisted on 16 December 1914; and subsequently Returned to Australia, 26 December 1918.

757 Private James Amesy BIGELOW, a 23 year old Farmer from Barambah via Murgon, Queensland. He enlisted on 17 December 1914; and at the conclusion of the war, Returned to Australia, 15 May 1919.

758 Private Hugh Reid BLACK, a 25 year old Farmer from Cardwell, Queensland. He enlisted on 16 December 1914; and subsequently Returned to Australia, 3 January 1916.

756 Private Maiben BRIGGS, a 30 year old Station hand from Brookstead, Queensland. He enlisted on 15 December 1914; and subsequently Returned to Australia, 11 January 1918.

759 Private Robert William BURVILLE, a 19 year old Farmer from Brisbane, Queensland. He enlisted on 17 December 1914; and subsequently Returned to Australia, 29 October 1918.

761 Private David Ormond BUTLER, a 27 year old Clerk from Kilcoy, Queensland. He enlisted on 16 December 1914; and subsequently Returned to Australia, 14 January 1917.

 

762 Private Ewen Colclough Beauchamp CAMERON, a 25 year old Turner from Burton Wellcamp, Queensland. He enlisted on 14 January 1915; and at the conclusion of the war, Returned to Australia, 16 January 1919.

766 Private Allan Johnstone CAMPBELL, a 19 year old Grazier from Merino Downs, Queensland. He enlisted on 15 December 1914; and at the conclusion of the war, Returned to Australia, 4 March 1919.

797 Private Douglas Dunmore CAMPBELL, a 22 year old Stockman from Albion, Queensland. He enlisted on 28 January 1915; and subsequently was Killed in Action, 4 August 1916.

764 Private Howard CHAMBERS, a 29 year old Labourer from Balmah, Queensland. He enlisted on 16 December 1914; and at the conclusion of the war, Returned to Australia, 2 April 1919.

765 Private Allan Gordon CLARK-KENNEDY, a 30 year old Farmer from Cardwell, Queensland. He enlisted on 16 December 1914; and at the conclusion of the war, Returned to Australia, 1 August 1919.

763 Private Cyril COOPER, a 24 year old Labourer from Railway Heights, New South Wales. He enlisted on 14 December 1914; and at the conclusion of the war, Returned to Australia, 13 March 1919.

 

767 Private Robert DEMPSTER, a 37 year old Carpenter from Claremont, Queensland. He enlisted on 16 December 1914; and subsequently Returned to Australia, 20 January 1916.

768 Private Frederick Charles DOBSON, a 40 year old Stockman from Longreach, Queensland. He enlisted on 15 December 1914; and at the conclusion of the war, Returned to Australia, 26 January 1919.

 

769 Private Owen EDWARDS, a 21 year old Stockman from Cherry Chase, Queensland. He enlisted on 14 December 1914; and subsequently Returned to Australia, 28 December 1917.

 

770 Private Roderick McDonald FORBES, a 24 year old Labourer from Ayr, Queensland. He enlisted on 15 December 1914; and subsequently Returned to Australia, 10 June 1915.

 

772 Private Samuel Gilbert GIBBS, a 20 year old Labourer from Foster, Victoria. He enlisted on 15 December 1914; and subsequently was Killed in Action, 21 July 1916.

773 Private Richard GLOSTER, a 28 year old Overseer from Ormiston, Queensland. He enlisted on 16 December 1914; and at the conclusion of the war, Returned to Australia, 15 May 1919.

774 Private Robert GRAY, a 22 year old Labourer from Alligator Creek, Queensland. He enlisted on 16 December 1914; and at the conclusion of the war, Returned to Australia, 7 January 1919.

798 Private Joseph Edward SMITH, a 22 year old Ironmonger from Young, New South Wales Brunswick, Victoria. He enlisted on 16 December 1914; and subsequently was Killed in Action, 30 August 1916.

793 Private Charles STANLEY, a 24 year old Stockman from Camberwell, Victoria. He enlisted on 15 December 1914; and subsequently was Discharged in Britain, 28 July 1917.

799 Private Thomas Campbell STEWART, a 25 year old Station hand from Malvern, Victoria. He enlisted on 16 December 1914; and subsequently Returned to Australia, 31 January 1918.

The Australian Light Horse Studies Centre is a not for profit and non profit group whose sole aim is to write the early history of the Australian Light Horse from 1900 - 1920. It is privately funded and the information is provided by the individuals within the group and while permission for the use of the material has been given for this site for these items by various donors, the residual and actual copyright for these items, should there be any, resides exclusively with the donors.
