HMAT A55 Kyarra

 

3rd Australian Light Horse Regiment, AIF, 8th Reinforcements Kyarra Group, embarked from Melbourne, Victoria on board HMAT A55 Kyarra 20 August 1915.

The HMAT A55 Kyarra weighed 6,953 tons with an average cruise speed of 14 knots or 25.92 kmph. It was owned by the AUSN Co Ltd, London, and manned by Australia officers and crew. The Kyarra was leased by the Commonwealth until 4 January 1918. The Kyarra was torpedoed and sunk by a submarine in the English Channel, 26 May 1918.

The ensuing individual soldier's embarkation information contains the following details:

Declared age of the soldier;

The last occupation held;

The last address as a civilian;

1231 Private George Henry BUTT, a 27 year old Farmer from Ringarooma, Tasmania. He enlisted on 9 July 1915; and subsequently Returned to Australia, 22 December 1918.

 

1240 Private Frederick Valentine FINLAYSON, a 20 year old Carpenter from Hobart, Tasmania. He enlisted on 13 May 1915; and at the conclusion of the war Returned to Australia, 5 March 1919.

1237 Private William James HOUSTON, a 25 year old Labourer from Launceston, Tasmania. He enlisted on 8 July 1915; and subsequently Returned to Australia, 23 December 1918.

 

1238 Private Joseph Frederick O'DOHERTY, a 19 year old Clerk from Battery Pt, Tasmania. He enlisted on 25 March 1915; and subsequently Returned to Australia, 12 April 1916.

 

1235 Private Robert Ascot Vale PETERS, a 21 year old Driver from Mowbray, Tasmania. He enlisted on 8 July 1915; and at the conclusion of the war Returned to Australia, 18 July 1919.
