HMAT A18 Wiltshire

 

The General Service Reinforcements, 1st GSR, Victoria, embarked from Sydney, New South Wales, on board the HMAT A18 Wiltshire 10 June 1918.

The HMAT A18 Wiltshire weighed 10,390 tons with an average cruise speed of 13.5 knots or 25.00 kmph. It was owned by the Commonwealth & Dominion Line Ltd, London, and leased by the Commonwealth until 2 October 1917.

The ensuing individual soldier's embarkation information contains the following details:

Rank on embarkation;

Full name of the soldier

Declared age of the soldier;

The last occupation held;

The last address as a civilian;

Enlistment Date; and,

Fate.

50420 Sapper James Stanford ANDERSON, an 18 year old Driver from Melbourne, Victoria. He enlisted on 25 January 1918. After embarkation and arrival in Egypt where he underwent additional training, he was allotted to the 4th Light Horse Regiment; and at the conclusion of the war Returned to Australia 15 June 1919.

50422 Private Ernest BENGOUGH, an 18 year old Labourer from Lancefield, Victoria. He enlisted on 30 August 1917. After embarkation and arrival in Egypt where he underwent additional training, he was allotted to the 4th Light Horse Regiment; and at the conclusion of the war Returned to Australia 15 June 1919.

 

50011 Private Louis BERTRAM, a 36 year old Seaman from Melbourne, Victoria. He enlisted on 1 November 1917. After embarkation and arrival in Egypt where he underwent additional training, he was allotted to the 21st Infantry Battalion; and at the conclusion of the war Returned to Australia 25 September 1919.

50423 Private Bernard George BOWER, a 19 year old Motor Driver from Ross, Tasmania. He enlisted on 1 November 1915. After embarkation and arrival in Egypt where he underwent additional training, he was allotted to the 3rd Light Horse Regiment; and at the conclusion of the war Returned to Australia 15 May 1919.

50480 Private Leslie James BRAY, a 19 year old Clerk from Cooma via Junee, New South Wales. He enlisted on 13 March 1918. After embarkation and arrival in Egypt where he underwent additional training, he was allotted to the 8th Light Horse Regiment; and at the conclusion of the war Returned to Australia 3 July 1919.

50425 Private Alexander Patrick BROADWAY, a 23 year old Farmer from Melbourne, Victoria. He enlisted on 8 November 1917. After embarkation and arrival in Egypt where he underwent additional training, he was allotted to the 8th Light Horse Regiment; and at the conclusion of the war Returned to Australia 3 September 1919.

50424 Private William Herbert George BROWNLAW, a 19 year old Farm Labourer from Hamilton, Victoria. He enlisted on 25 January 1918. After embarkation and arrival in Egypt where he underwent additional training, he was allotted to the 1st Light Horse Field Squadron Engineers; and at the conclusion of the war Returned to Australia 3 July 1919.

50426 Private Alexander Stanley BULL, a 21 year old Farmer from Horsham, Victoria. He enlisted on 9 September 1917. After embarkation and arrival in Egypt where he underwent additional training, he was allotted to the 8th Light Horse Regiment; and at the conclusion of the war Returned to Australia 3 July 1919.

50427 Private Austin Jellard BYRNE, a 19 year old Student from Hawthorn, Victoria. He enlisted on 18 December 1917. After embarkation and arrival in Egypt where he underwent additional training, he was allotted to the 8th Light Horse Regiment; and at the conclusion of the war Returned to Australia 3 July 1919.

 

50419 Private Alan Bissett CALDWELL, a 19 year old Clerk from Melbourne, Victoria. He enlisted on 12 December 1917. After embarkation and arrival in Egypt where he underwent additional training, he was allotted to the 8th Light Horse Regiment; and at the conclusion of the war Returned to Australia 3 July 1919.

50417 Private Cyril Melville CLARKE, a 21 year old Fireman from Adelaide, South Australia. He enlisted on 8 September 1914. After embarkation and arrival in Egypt where he underwent additional training, he was allotted to the 9th Light Horse Regiment; and at the conclusion of the war Returned to Australia 26 July 1919.

50428 Private Bertie Carlyle COUPER, a 21 year old Farmer from Melbourne, Victoria. He enlisted on 21 January 1918. After embarkation and arrival in Egypt where he underwent additional training, he was allotted to the 3rd Light Horse Machine Gun Squadron; and at the conclusion of the war Returned to Australia 10 July 1919.

50430 Private Charles Cloudsley Melbourne CURRIE, a 20 year old Carpenter from Melbourne, Victoria. He enlisted on 25 January 1918. After embarkation and arrival in Egypt where he underwent additional training, he was allotted to the 2nd Light Horse Field Squadron Engineers; and at the conclusion of the war Returned to Australia 26 July 1919.

 

50431 Private Charles Albert DALE, a 22 year old Farmer from St Arnaud, Victoria. He enlisted on 7 February 1918. After embarkation and arrival in Egypt where he underwent additional training, he was allotted to the 8th Light Horse Regiment; and at the conclusion of the war Returned to Australia 3 July 1919.

50432 Private William Albert DAVIDSON, a 36 year old Business Manager from Adelaide, South Australia. He enlisted on 11 December 1917. After embarkation and arrival in Egypt where he underwent additional training, he was allotted to the 15th Light Horse Regiment; and at the conclusion of the war Returned to Australia 24 July 1919.

 

50433 Private Henry Berry FAIRWEATHER, an 18 year old Clerk from Windsor, Victoria. He enlisted on 30 July 1917. After embarkation and arrival in Egypt where he underwent additional training, he was allotted to the 8th Light Horse Regiment; and at the conclusion of the war Returned to Australia 20 July 1919.

50418 Acting Corporal Frank FLYNNE, a 21 year old Tailor from Coburg, Victoria. He enlisted on 18 January 1918. After embarkation and arrival in Egypt where he underwent additional training, he was allotted to the 35th Company Australian Army Supply Corps, Australian Mounted Division Train; and at the conclusion of the war Returned to Australia 28 July 1919.

50434 Private Alfred Frederick FREEMAN, a 23 year old Farmer from Melbourne, Victoria. He enlisted on 2 February 1918. After embarkation and arrival in Egypt where he underwent additional training, he was allotted to the 8th Light Horse Regiment; and at the conclusion of the war Returned to Australia 3 July 1919.

 

50435 Private Clarence Henry GALE, a 18 year old Labourer from Horsham, Victoria. He enlisted on 24 January 1918. After embarkation and arrival in Egypt where he underwent additional training, he was allotted to the 1st Light Horse Field Squadron Engineers; and at the conclusion of the war Returned to Australia 3 July 1919.

50436 Private Albert Edwin GILBERT, a 23 year old Farmer from Seymour, Victoria. He enlisted on 6 February 1918. After embarkation and arrival in Egypt where he underwent additional training, he was allotted to the 8th Light Horse Regiment; and at the conclusion of the war Returned to Australia 3 July 1919.

 

50437 Private George Albert HARRIS, a 33 year old Labourer from Ballarat, Victoria. He enlisted on 9 February 1918. After embarkation and arrival in Egypt where he underwent additional training, he was allotted to the 4th Light Horse Regiment; and at the conclusion of the war Returned to Australia 15 June 1919.

50438 Private Robert Reubin HARVEY, a 22 year old Grocer from Northcote, Victoria. He enlisted on 30 January 1918. After embarkation and arrival in Egypt where he underwent additional training, he was allotted to the 15th Light Horse Regiment; and subsequently Died of Disease 11 June 1919.

50439 Private Thomas Samuel HENRY, a 27 year old Labourer from Port Melbourne, Victoria. He enlisted on 5 March 1918. After embarkation and arrival in Egypt where he underwent additional training, he was allotted to the 4th Light Horse Regiment; and at the conclusion of the war Returned to Australia 15 June 1919.

50440 Private John Albert HOLLAND, a 28 year old Tramway Gripman from Jolimont, Victoria. He enlisted on 21 January 1918. After embarkation and arrival in Egypt where he underwent additional training, he was allotted to the 8th Light Horse Regiment; and at the conclusion of the war Returned to Australia 3 July 1919.

50475 Private Francis George HOSKING, an 18 year old Farm Labourer from Wycheproof, Victoria. He enlisted on 29 January 1918. After embarkation and arrival in Egypt where he underwent additional training, he was allotted to the 8th Light Horse Regiment; and at the conclusion of the war Returned to Australia 3 July 1919.

50441 Private Clifford Beresford HUGHES, a 21 year old Civil Servant from Claremont, Tasmania. He enlisted on 30 November 1917. After embarkation and arrival in Egypt where he underwent additional training, he was allotted to the 1st Light Horse Field Squadron Engineers; and at the conclusion of the war Returned to Australia 3 July 1919.

 

50443 Private Jack Samuel INMAN, an 18 year old Grocers helper from South Hobart, Tasmania. He enlisted on 28 November 1917. After embarkation and arrival in Egypt where he underwent additional training, he was allotted to the 3rd Light Horse Regiment; and at the conclusion of the war Returned to Australia 15 May 1919.

 

50444 Private John Hamilton KAYE, a 28 year old Grazier from Canterbury, Victoria. He enlisted on 6 December 1917. After embarkation and arrival in Egypt where he underwent additional training, he was allotted to the 8th Light Horse Regiment; and at the conclusion of the war Returned to Australia 3 July 1919.

50479 Private Albert Percy KIRKWOOD, an 18 year old Printer from Launceston, Tasmania. He enlisted on 7 November 1917. After embarkation and arrival in Egypt where he underwent additional training, he was allotted to the 3rd Light Horse Regiment; and at the conclusion of the war Returned to Australia 16 May 1919.

 

50450 Private George Baker MADDEN, a 22 year old Farmer from Geelong, Victoria. He enlisted on 20 December 1917. After embarkation and arrival in Egypt where he underwent additional training, he was allotted to the 8th Light Horse Regiment; and at the conclusion of the war Returned to Australia 3 July 1919.

50446 Private Thomas Richard McDONALD, a 19 year old Labourer from Ulverstone, Tasmania. He enlisted on 13 December 1917. After embarkation and arrival in Egypt where he underwent additional training, he was allotted to the 3rd Light Horse Regiment; and at the conclusion of the war Returned to Australia 2 August 1919.

50447 Private Sidney Robert McGAW, a 23 year old Clerk from Melbourne, Victoria. He enlisted on 16 August 1917. After embarkation and arrival in Egypt where he underwent additional training, he was allotted to the AIF Headquarters; and at the conclusion of the war Returned to Australia 16 May 1919.

50473 Private Andrew James McINNES, a 23 year old Farmer from Windsor, Victoria. He enlisted on 12 March 1918. After embarkation and arrival in Egypt where he underwent additional training, he was allotted to the 8th Light Horse Regiment; and at the conclusion of the war Returned to Australia 3 July 1919.

50416 Acting Sergeant Stewart Desmond McKENNY, a 30 year old Mining Engineer from Valley Heights, New South Wales. He enlisted on 16 April 1917. After embarkation and arrival in Egypt where he underwent additional training, he was allotted to the 1st Light Horse Field Squadron Engineers; and at the conclusion of the war Returned to Australia 3 July 1919.

50448 Private John James McKINNON, a 24 year old Horse breaker from Melbourne, Victoria. He enlisted on 11 August 1917. After embarkation and arrival in Egypt where he underwent additional training, he was allotted to the 8th Light Horse Regiment; and at the conclusion of the war Returned to Australia 3 July 1919.

50478 Private Edward MERREY, a 39 year old Baker from St Kilda, Victoria. He enlisted on 17 October 1917. After embarkation and arrival in Egypt where he underwent additional training, he was allotted to the 4th Light Horse Regiment; and at the conclusion of the war Returned to Australia 15 June 1919.

50452 Private David MYERS, a 19 year old Steward from East Perth, Western Australia. He enlisted on 7 May 1917. After embarkation and arrival in Egypt where he underwent additional training, he was allotted to the 10th Light Horse Regiment; and at the conclusion of the war Returned to Australia 10 July 1919.

50538 Private Ivan Robert GRIFFITHS, a 19 year old Farmhand from Wagin, Western Australia. He enlisted on 21 January 1918. After embarkation and arrival in Egypt where he underwent additional training, he was allotted to the 3rd Light Horse Machine Gun Squadron; and at the conclusion of the war Returned to Australia 10 July 1919.

 

50539 Private Ernest Alfred JOHNSON, an 18 year old Horse Driver from Geraldton, Western Australia. He enlisted on 23 July 1917. After embarkation and arrival in Egypt where he underwent additional training, he was allotted to the 10th Light Horse Regiment; and at the conclusion of the war Returned to Australia 5 March 1919.

 

50541 Private Thomas Edwin MANTON, an 18 year old Labourer from Albany, Western Australia. He enlisted on 16 March 1918. After embarkation and arrival in Egypt where he underwent additional training, he was allotted to the 3rd Light Horse Machine Gun Squadron; and at the conclusion of the war Returned to Australia 20 September 1919.

50542 Private George Joseph MARKEY, an 18 year old Orchardist from Bridgetown, Western Australia. He enlisted on 23 October 1917. After embarkation and arrival in Egypt where he underwent additional training, he was allotted to the 10th Light Horse Regiment; and at the conclusion of the war Returned to Australia 10 July 1919.

 

50543 Private Alfred PERRY, a 30 year old Stockman from Perth, Western Australia. He enlisted on 13 February 1918. After embarkation and arrival in Egypt where he underwent additional training, he was allotted to the 10th Light Horse Regiment; and at the conclusion of the war Returned to Australia 10 July 1919.

 

50546 Private Sydney Leopold THORNTON, a 25 year old Farmer from Wagin, Western Australia. He enlisted on 7 September 1917. After embarkation and arrival in Egypt where he underwent additional training, he was allotted to the 3rd Light Horse Machine Gun Squadron; and at the conclusion of the war Returned to Australia 17 July 1919.
