"At a mile distant their thousand hooves were stuttering thunder, coming at a rate that frightened a man - they were an awe inspiring sight, galloping through the red haze - knee to knee and horse to horse - the dying sun glinting on bayonet points..." Trooper Ion Idriess

Aerial Reconnaissance over Lone Pine, 6 August 1915

Signal issued at 0840, 6 August 1915

On the morning, prior to the scheduled battle at Lone Pine, air reconnaissance was ordered by the Australian Division to fly over the proposed battlefield. Direction for assistance in identifying were given to the men in the advanced trenches which included firing flares and other identifying actions. The signal reads:

Australian Division

GHQ are sending aeroplane to reconnoitre Lone Pine and asks begins can you assist reconnaissance asked for by showing flares in firing trenches opposite Lone Pine when aeroplane comes over about 1100 ends will you please comply.

Anzac 0826

By 1246 the results of the reconnaissance and prisoner interrogations were in and made available.

Signal issued at 1246, 6 August 1915

The signal reads:

Australian Division

1246, 6 August 1915

Aeroplane reports that camps round Anzac grown in size. Prisoners captured this morning state five Turkish regiments or roughly 12,000 to 15,000 men opposed our right from Johnsons Gully to sea aaa Ammunition plentiful aaa Had not seen reinforcement but heard they were expected aaa It is possible these are fresh troops opposing No 3 Section as 57th Regiment formerly opposite Quinns now reported by prisoners on Turkish left aaa Aeroplane has located four fresh gun emplacements at 93.N.7 and 2 at 80.P.3 occupied addressed 13th Division reported Aust and NZ and A Div.

Anzac

The Turks had deployed 5 full Infantry Regiments consisting of between 12,000 to 15,000 men in front of the Allied forces. In addition, there were many reserves available. Further bad news is indicated that there are some new artillery works with fresh gun emplacements. The Australians were scheduled to move off in another four hours and this did not auger well for the beginning of the August offesnsive.

3rd Light Horse Brigade Signals, 11 August 1915 - Part 1
Topic: BatzG - Aug 1915

The August Offensive

Gallipoli, August 1915

3rd Light Horse Brigade Signals, 11 August 1915 - Part 1

Of all the battles that occurred at Gallipoli, those that occurred in August are the best preserved in terms of records. There is a profusion of signal traffic retained in the records which allows the historian to view history in its most immediate and unvarnished form.

Note: TPD = Torpedo Destroyer

Signal sent by 3rd Light Horse Brigade, 1650, 11 August 1915

The Signal reads:

NZ & A

Anzac

11/8/15

No change in position as previously reported aaa Have been engaging enemy on E end of Rhododendron Spur with machine guns all day in Reverse and enfilade fire with excellent results aaa Suggested TPD carry on tonight to prevent enemy improving his position aaa When fire relaxes Turks continue digging aaa Range 2,000 yards from BHQ. Position junction Rhododendron Spur Chunuk Bair aaa

From 4/Sec

1650

The message aims to give a suggestion on suppressing the entrenching activities of the Turks in the sector through maintaining a strong fire rate with the machine guns from the 3rd Light Horse Brigade position. This proposition relied upon a limitless supply of ammunition.

Signal sent by 3rd Light Horse Brigade, 1656, 11 August 1915

The Signal reads:

BN 292

11 . 8 . 15

Am endeavouring to deal with Sniping but a lot comes from single shots from machine guns A1 and B3 trenches which we cannot reach aaa Suggest TBD range on them as they have been active last two days.

No 4/Sec

1656

This signal highlights the problem of sniping and the inability of the 3rd Light Horse Brigade to suppress this Turkish activity.

Signal sent by 3rd Light Horse Brigade, 1915, 11 August 1915

The Signal reads:
NZ & A and Anzac

BN 293

11/8/15

Glad if "Chelma" TPD will keep searchlight on Chunuk Bair so that we may prevent Turks from improving their position aaa Right long CLOOF to above place and especially junction with Rhododendron Hill aaa Also glad if TPD will pound Turk Trenches A1 and B3 where MGs are firing on Beach.

No/4

1915

This series of signals is self explanatory in that the aim was to suppress the Turkish ability to develop their trenches at Chunuk Bair and Rhododendron Hill. These signals also indicate the tools at their command to undertake this task.

The August Offensive

Gallipoli, August 1915

3rd Light Horse Brigade Signals, 11 August 1915 - Part 2

Of all the battles that occurred at Gallipoli, those that occurred in August are the best preserved in terms of records. There is a profusion of signal traffic retained in the records which allows the historian to view history in its most immediate and unvarnished form.

Signal sent by 3rd Light Horse Brigade, 2100, 11 August 1915

The Signal reads:

To all units
BM 364

11/8/15

The following message has been received from the GOC begins

"Please express to all ranks of your Brigade my appreciation of their gallantry during their fighting of the last four days"

In publishing the above, which will be recorded in your orders Brigadier General Hughes desires me to say that in his opinion notion could have been finer or more heroic than the response of Lieutenant Colonel White and his men with those of the 10th who came after including our comrades of the Royal Welch Fusiliers and of all the others who took part in the operations referred to by General Sir Alexander Godley.

JM Antill, Lieutenant Colonel
Brigade Major

No 4/Sec

2100
This signal from Colonel Antill is an addition to the signal sent by General Godley.

Signal sent by 3rd Light Horse Brigade, 2110, 11 August 1915

The Signal reads:

NZ & A Division

BM 365

11/8/15

Of those mentioned Playne and Brockman were transferred to 1st Australian Division Engineers on tenth Instant aaa Whitehead killed seventh instant aaa Sergeants Maude and Humphreys have asked for their nomination to Commissions to be cancelled.

JMA
BM

No 4/ sec

2110

This signal relates to filling in information about personnel. Interesting to note that 557 Sgt Cornwallis Charles Wyndham "Wallace" Maude, the son of General Cornwallis Oswald Maude and 551 Sgt Cyril Humphreys requested that their commissions be cancelled. Both were promoted to Second Lieutenant. For Maude, the request was never acted upon for he was shot in the head by a sniper's bullet on 13 August 1915 while Humphreys was missing in action at Hill 60 on 27 August 1915. Later a Court of Enquiry declared Humphreys Killed in Action on 29 August 1915.

Signal sent by 3rd Light Horse Brigade, 2130, 11 August 1915

The Signal reads:

NZ & A and Anzac

BM 366

11/8/15

Nothing further to report, situation the same aaa Enemy's attempts to improve their works at ends of Rhododendron Hill and Chunuk Bair have been kept down to dark by artillery fire in cooperation with our monitors, machine gun and rifle fire aaa All quiet

JM Antill
BM

No 4/ sec

2130

This signal, sent at 11.30 p.m. indicates that harrassing fire has impeded Turkish entrenching works at Rhododentdron Hill and Chunuk Bair.
