9th Light Horse Regiment Location - Heliopolis, Egypt.

9th Light Horse Regiment War Diary -   Syllabus of training for the reorganisation of the Regiment was outlined today. Horses. One 342 horses are in the lines, the remainder having been taken by the Composite Regiment to the Western Front. Requisitions for equipment have been sent to SOO.

1917

Sunday, December 30, 1917

9th Light Horse Regiment Location - Khurbetha Ibn Harith, Palestine.

9th Light Horse Regiment War Diary - A party was making a road from Regimental Headquarters to where engineers were forming a road at Sq J6B. Very few enemy were observed. Orders received that Division would be relieved on 31st December.

3rd Light Horse Brigade War Diary - The relief of the Brigade by the 29th Infantry Brigade commenced at 0900 but owing to the steep and rocky nature of the country was not completed until 1600.

At 2000 the Brigade was concentrated in the vicinity of Kefr Rut.

Instructions were received that the withdrawal of the Brigade to Katra would commence at 1100 on 2nd January, 1918, and that the Brigade led horses would reach Brigade Headquarters at 1000 that day.

Since the 27th October, 1917, the Brigade had been engaged in continuos operations with the enemy, which period was only punctuated with two short periods of rest at Wadi Sukhreir and El Mejdel. Considering the severity and number of actions in which the Brigade had been engaged the casualties suffered, with the exception of those suffered from enemy aeroplane bombing, and had been extremely light. The health of the troops, with the exception of the epidemic of diarrhoea in 8th Light Horse Regiment had been good throughout. All ranks had been called upon for long periods of endurance and had responded on all occasions.

1918

9th Light Horse Regiment War Diary -  Non Commissioned Officers instructional class was conducted from 0830 - 0930. Heavy rains during the night flooded part of the Regimental area.

1919

9th Light Horse Regiment War Diary -  Application was made today to have the reinforcements of the South Australian Squadron of the 11th Light Horse Regiment sent to this camp to be attached to D Squadron for training.

1916

1917

Saturday, December 29, 1917

9th Light Horse Regiment Location - Khurbetha Ibn Harith, Palestine.

9th Light Horse Regiment War Diary - 0600 Remainder of Regiment moved forward to night outpost line. The line was advanced about 500 yards forward of night outpost line from Sq F25B to Sq Z30B and A. This line was consolidated and held as permanent line. Regimental Headquarters established in Sq Z30D.8.8. Enemy very quiet only a few desultory shots fired into 9th Light Horse Regiment section. Enemy observation posts in Sq F15d F15c and F8d Khirbit el Meidan. The country the Regiment advanced over was very rough and broken by wadis necessitating the using of pack horses in lieu of camels for transport of reserve ammunition etc.

3rd Light Horse Brigade War Diary - At 0615 10th Light Horse Regiment and 9th Light Horse Regiment moved forward to occupy main defensive line - Khurbetha Ibn Harith - Jurdeh, and were in position at 0930. Brigade Headquarters was established with 8th Light Horse Regiment in reserve in rear of Khurbetha Ibn Harith. The weather was now settled and fine. Throughout the night 29/30th December there was no enemy rifle or machine gun fire.

During part of the course of his military service with the AIF, 2823 Private Herbert Leslie Schramm, a farmer from White's River, near Tumby Bay on the Eyre Peninsular, kept a diary of his life. Bert was not a man of letters so this diary was produced with great effort on his behalf. Bert made a promise to his sweetheart, Lucy Solley, that he would do so after he received the blank pocket notebook wherein these entries are found. As a Brigade Scout since September 1918, he took a lead part in the September 1918 breakout by the Allied forces in Palestine. Bert's diary entries are placed alongside those of the 9th Light Horse Regiment to which he belonged and to the 3rd Light Horse Brigade to which the 9th LHR was attached. On this basis we can follow Bert in the context of his formation.

9th Light Horse Regiment War Diary -  Received instructions to absorb all the reinforcements of 9th Light Horse Regiment, also that 4th Light Horse Brigade would probably be reformed and that D Squadron was to be kept separate. Drafted reinforcements to Squadrons.

Total parade state shows:

29 Officers, 31 Sergeants, 802 Other Ranks, Total 862

Of this number the strength of D Squadron is:

6 Officers, 6 Sergeants, 101 Other Ranks, Total 113

9th Light Horse Regiment War Diary - The Regiment undertook routine work for the day. Scroop, 1601 Lance Corporal PG, died of wounds.

1917

Friday, December 28, 1917

9th Light Horse Regiment Location - Balin, Palestine.

9th Light Horse Regiment War Diary - Holding and consolidating line. One Squadron 8th Light Horse Regiment attached and used for consolidating support line.

At 0600 Wagg, Lieutenant BSW, with a strong patrol, reached Sq O1a without opposition. C Squadron sent a patrol to J6 central.

At 1200 Wagg, Lieutenant BSW, with his patrol entered Khurbetha Ibn Harith and found it had been evacuated by enemy during night.

1630 One officer and two troops from each Squadron under Siekmann, Major TA, moved and occupied line F25 central to Z30 central both inclusive. Line occupied by 1900.

3rd Light Horse Brigade War Diary - At 0600 strong patrols pushed out and at 1100 discovered Khurbetha Ibn Harith clear of enemy. Small enemy posts were located at Khirbit el Meidan. The country in which the Brigade was now operating was extremely high, rough and rocky and transport difficulties were increased. Camels were used and found to be very unsatisfactory over the high and rocky hills, and very slow in movement; their feet were cut on the rocks and their further use off the tracks was forbidden. Improvisations were made in places and wheeled transport was able to be brought forward to Units Headquarters. Parties from the local villages assisted in this work, receiving from three to seven Egyptian Pounds per day, according to working capacity. There was little enemy activity with the exception of occasional sniping throughout the day and night.

1918

9th Light Horse Regiment War Diary - Eighty cases of Christmas of AIF Comforts arrived. Parsons, Major HM, Luxmoore, Captain EM; and, Shaw, Lieutenant OJ, proceeded to motor to Besherri for two days.
