"At a mile distant their thousand hooves were stuttering thunder, coming at a rate that frightened a man - they were an awe inspiring sight, galloping through the red haze - knee to knee and horse to horse - the dying sun glinting on bayonet points..." Trooper Ion Idriess

9th Light Horse Regiment

War Diary, 23 February

Pro Gloria et Honore - For Glory and Honour

Regimental March -  Marching Through Georgia

The following entries are extracted and transcribed from the 9th Light Horse Regiment War Diary, the originals of which are held by the Australian War Memorial. There are 366 entries on this site. Each day has entries as they occurred from 1914 to 1919. In addition to the 9th Light Horse Regiment War Diary, when appropriate, entries from the 3rd Light Horse Brigade War Diary and other regiments with the Brigade will also appear. Entries from the unit history, Darley, TH, With the Ninth Light Horse in the Great War, Adelaide, Hassell Press, 1924 will also appear from time to time. The aim is to give the broadest context to the story and allow the reader to follow the day to day activities of the regiment. If a relative happened to have served in the regiment during the Great War, then this provides a general framework in which the individual story may be told.

Entrained at 1700 and moved out at 1800 and arrived Kantara West at 1930. Disentrained here and marched to Kantara East and bivouacked near railway station for the remainder of night. 9th Light Horse Regiment Location - HMAT A10 "Karroo", at sea.

9th Light Horse Regiment War Diary -  No Entry.

Carew Reynell Diary - Passed the tropic of Capricorn at midnight last night. Very steamy and hot and quite still.

Got 6 horses from No. 2 Hold up on deck and keeping all the open spaces under the hatchways filled.

The mare, No. 16318 about the same except that temperature is down to 104.2 and has remained so all day. Am more hopeful of recovery.

The cleanliness in the holds has entirely got rid of the smell of ammonia in all, except the aft end of No. 2 Hold. 6 now on deck there should be considerable improvement there tomorrow however.

Fortunately the Chief Officer - Mr Cartwright - is as keen as we are to land all the horses and no trouble is too much for him. The excellent feeding and comfort on board has put all hands in the very best of spirits. They work most perseveringly at the stables and discipline is excellent. They really are a fine lot of men. If the Officers only had a proper training and the NCOs done a months school, what a Regiment it would be - a determined hard faced set with plenty 'horse sense' - they would do well.

1917

9th Light Horse Regiment War Diary - Lewis Guns fire practice [application and gimping]. Squadrons practiced preparing to become cavalry. Farmer, 76 Regimental Quartermaster Sergeant MO, promoted to commissioned rank to be Lieutenant dated 2 February 1917.

1918

Thursday, February 21, 1918

9th Light Horse Regiment Location - Deir el Belah, Palestine.

9th Light Horse Regiment War Diary - Tests held to decide Regimental representatives in Brigade mounted sports. Orders for musketry practices issued.

1919

Friday, February 21, 1919

9th Light Horse Regiment Location - El Mina, Lebanon.

9th Light Horse Regiment War Diary - 8th Light Horse Regiment embarked today. Move order issued.

The Regiment handed over all horses to 5th Cavalry Division, 10th Light Horse Regiment and 3rd Machine Gun Squadron. All tents taken down and heavy baggage transported by camels and wagons to embarkation pier El Mina. All ranks had to work at top speed to get the work completed in daylight.

Orders received that the Regiment would embark 0830, 22nd February 1919.
