The following entries are extracted and transcribed from the 9th Light Horse Regiment War Diary, the originals of which are held by the Australian War Memorial. There are 366 entries on this site. Each day has entries as they occurred from 1914 to 1919. In addition to the 9th Light Horse Regiment War Diary, when appropriate, entries from the 3rd Light Horse Brigade War Diary and other regiments with the Brigade will also appear. Entries from the unit history, Darley, TH, With the Ninth Light Horse in the Great War, Adelaide, Hassell Press, 1924 will also appear from time to time. The aim is to give the broadest context to the story and allow the reader to follow the day to day activities of the regiment. If a relative happened to have served in the regiment during the Great War, then this provides a general framework in which the individual story may be told.

See 4th Military District, South Australia for militia activities.

1915

Wednesday, February 24, 1915
9th Light Horse Regiment Location - HMAT A10 "Karroo", at sea.
9th Light Horse Regiment War Diary - No entry.

Carew Reynell Diary - The mare No. 16318 down to normal and doing well.
A gelding from the Poop Deck has suddenly developed pneumonia and we haven't much hope of saving him. Temperature 104 and breathing very, very laboured. Captain Worthington [the vet] says lungs not doing enough to enable the heart to oxidise blood and nothing but a miracle could save him. All going very smoothly and all ranks doing their work satisfactorily.

1916

Thursday, February 24, 1916

9th Light Horse Regiment War Diary - No entry.

1917

Saturday, February 24, 1917
9th Light Horse Regiment Location - Hod Masaid, Sinai.
9th Light Horse Regiment War Diary - The General Officer in Command 3rd Light Horse Brigade inspected the camp the men standing to their horses.

1918

Sunday, February 24, 1918
9th Light Horse Regiment Location - Deir el Belah, Palestine.
9th Light Horse Regiment War Diary - Shaw, Lieutenant OJ, proceeded to Imperial School of Instruction, Zeitoun.

1919

Monday, February 24, 1919
9th Light Horse Regiment Location - Rafa, Egypt.
9th Light Horse Regiment War Diary - 0430 Reveilled and entrained at 0530 and moved to Rafa at 0630 arriving there at 1300. Disentrained and marched to Empire Club [Directed by Miss McPhillamy] - 3/4 mile west of railway station. The three Regiments lunched here, then moved to bivouac area near by.
