605th Machine Gun Company War Diary - 3 to 8 May 1916 

The entries

3.V.16:

The company furnished details to unload the trucks whilst the remainder pitched tents. There was coffee at 6.30.

4.V.16:

6.30 a.m. morning coffee issued. 12 noon dinner. Early to-day 9 horses per company were received. In Constantinople we received 5 Turkish grooms for the company. We got coffee at 6 p.m.

5.V. 16:   

At 3 a.m. we got coffee and every man got a water bottle for the march. At 4 a.m. the mounted men and those marching moved off. After marching five hours we covered 19 kilometers and reached the first German camping ground at Kadirhan. Here we halted till 3.30 p.m. and then on to Tschamalam which we reached at 6.30 p.m. At 8.30 p.m. we got dinner and evening coffee. We spent the night in the barracks built by the local mechanical transport for the German troops. Private Maier was left at Posanti on guard duty.

6.V.16:   

To-day we got coffee at 3 a.m. and at 4.30 marched to the huts at Kawalki Han. Here we remained the whole day and the night. Dinners were at 2 p.m. and we got cocoa at 6 p.m.

7.V.16:   

To-day we got coffee at 6 a.m. The mechanical transport arrived at 6.30 and took our baggage, and all of us were allowed to ride distributed among all the lorries. The lorries were unloaded during the course of the morning and our kit loaded on to the railway trucks. The day's rations were received from the field kitchen in Kulek-Boghaz.

8.V.16:    

To-day we got coffee early. From 5 to 9 a.m. our gear was shifted from the lorries as they arrived to the railway trucks. For dinner our company had to furnish 15 packets of preserved vegetables and 4 tins of preserves meat, as the rest of our supplies had already been loaded. By 2 p.m. the balance was loaded and at 4.45 the train moved off from Kulek Boghaz to Adana. At 6.30 p.m. we were given tea at the main railway station by the German Colony at Adana. After that we went on to Mamoure. We arrived at 10.30 p.m. and had to spend the night at the railway.

War Diary, 8 May to 17 May 1916 

The entries

9.V.16:

By 2 p.m. the balance was loaded and at 4.45 the train moved off from Kulek Boghaz to Adana. At 6.30 p.m. we were given tea at the main railway station by the German Colony at Adana. After that we went on to Mamoure. We arrived at 10.30 p.m. and had to spend the night at the railway.

9.V.16:     

We pitched camp early this day and in the afternoon part of the company helped to unloaded. The three meals were issued a.m.., noon, and p.m.

10.V.16:    

Nothing new today. Breakfast a.m., dinner noon, coffee evening. With the 4d. coming to us the company bought eggs and distributed them to the men.

11.V.16:    

For dinner to-day we got fresh mutton from the local L of C depot. Part of the company had to go on guard and another part had to help unload. The three meals were duly received.

12.V.16:    

To-day another unloading fatigue party had to be furnished. The field kitchen got mutton for the dinner to-day.

13.V.16:    

From to-day onwards dinners were issued in the evening and coffee at noon. To-day the company had to detach two men (L.C. Beuster and Pte. Haake) to Islahije on guard duty.

14.V.16:     

No now events to-day. The company furnished a working party.

15.V.16:    

No events to-day.

16.V.16:    

No events to-day.

17.V.16:    

Today we received orders that everything was to be packed up as us are to move off early tomorrow.

War Diary, 17 May to 19 May 1916 

The entries

17.V.16:   

Today we received orders that everything was to be packed up as us are to move off early tomorrow. Today two men were sent on guard duty to Ensili. The field kitchen issued evening dinner early at 4 p.m. Pte. Maier, who remained on guard at Posanti, reported sick on the 10th inst. and was taken from Posanti to the Taurus ambulance-hospital Tschamlahan.

18.V.16:   

By 11 this morning the remainder of our things with tents and peaks were loaded on the main line trucks. The men travelled by train at 11.30 a.m. to Ingerli. During the course of the afternoon our boxes were loaded on to the field railway (narrow gauge). We draw cash in lieu of rations for to-day as our field kitchen, drawn by oxen, left one day ahead of us. Acting Serjt. Major Schriever fell sick early to-day and went by rail Kulek-Boghaz to the Taurus hospital at Tschamlahan.

19.V.16:   

Early this morning 5 a.m. our first troop trains, 9 men, consisting of 3 trains of 8 to 10 trucks, were despatched. On every track there was one N.C.O. or man as guard. At 9 am. we arrived at Bagsche and halted there for about an hour. We arrived at Arian at 10.30 a.m. and stopped till 1.30 p.m.. Here we changed engines, the steam engines being replaced by petrol engines. The latter took our train through the tunnel which begins at Arian. In the middle of the tunnel we stopped for 2½ hours and arrived at Entili at the other end at 6.15 p.m. At 7 p.m. 10 trucks of our train proceeded from Entili to Kulek Bagsche which we reached at 8.20. Here we spent the night in the temporary station buildings. At 6 p.m. the mounted men under the company commander rode from Mamure to Kassan Bey which they reached at midnight. The remainder of the company travelled at noon by the field railway (narrow gauge) to Airan, which they reached at 5.30 p.m. and spent the night at the entrance to the tunnel.

War Diary, 19 May to 26 May 1916 

The entries

19.V.16:    

Here we spent the night in the temporary station buildings. At 6 p.m. the mounted men under the company commander rode from Mamure to Kassan Bey which they reached at midnight. The remainder of the company travelled at noon by the field railway (narrow gauge) to Airan, which they reached at 5.30 p.m. and spent the night at the entrance to the tunnel.

20.V.16:    

Early this morning the boxes which had arrived here were transferred to the broad-gauge line from the narrow gauge railway and proceeded at 11.30 a.m. to Islahic. We arrived here at noon. The march of the mounted men was continued at 4 a.m., reaching Islahic at 9 a.m. The remainder of the company which had spent the night at Airan, railed at 6 a.m. through the tunnel and arrived at Entili at 10 a.m. and halted till noon. The field railway then took them to Kurt Bagsche which they reached at 2 p.m. They left here at 4 p.m. and arrived at Islahije at 4.30 p.m.

21.V.16:    

To-day we got our food again from the field kitchen, and what was really dinner we got this evening. Otherwise nothing new.

22.V.16:    

Company strength 1 officer, 10 N.C.O's., 19 men. Supplies (meat, bread, etc.) from the Turkish supply Depot.

23.V.16:    

Supplies from the Turkish Supply Depot. The water here was very good but unfortunately flat.

24.V.16:    

Company Sergeant Major Flugel fell sink of dysentery to-day and was sent to the L. of C. hospital at Aleppo. Supplies from the Turkish Supply Depot.

25.V.16:    

Supplies from the Turkish Supply Depot.

26.V.16:

German 605th Machine Gun Company (MGC)

War Diary, 26 May to 30 May 1916 

The entries

26.V.16:     

Pte. Reinhardt fell sick of tonsillitis and was handed over to the 213th Field Ambulance here. Supplies from the T.S. Depot.

27.V.16:    

Nothing new to-day. supplies from the T.S. Depot.

28.V.16.    

We had to wait till to-day for the rest of our boxes which we loaded here on railway trucks. We moved off at 9.45 a.m. At 5.30 p.m. we arrived at Aleppo. Here we were welcomed in a very friendly Banner by the German Colony of Aleppo and got coffee and cakes. At 11 p.m. we journeyed on. To-day our supplies were furnished by stores taken from the Turkish Supply Depot. In Aleppo we got bread from the Turkish Supply Depot.

29.V.16:    

We passed Homs early this morning. In the afternoon we passed by Baalbek and reachedRayak at 5 p.m. This evening, we got ½ litre of wine per man for supper.

30.V.16:    

At 10 a.m. we moved from the goods station at Rayak to the passenger station from which we left at 11.30 a.m. We arrived at the suburban station Baranke of Damascus at 4.30 p.m. and were welcomed in a very friendly manner by the local German Colony. Since our horses and oxen, which had to march the section from Rayak to Damascus, had not arrived here we had to wait till next day at Kadem station on the Kedjas line. On our arrival at Damascus today we had to send Pte. Runge to the Damascus hospital. Pte. Runge had fallen sick en route and, as referred to above, was sent to hospital on Turkish diagnosis as a case of "spotted typhus".
